Do you have favorite shoes for summer? Mine are espadrilles. I love the versatility and ease of wearing them. Although I’ve been buying these gems since my 20s, I think they are the perfect footwear choice for women 40 and over (especially those of us who aren’t willing to sacrifice comfort for style). Espadrilles are timeless classics that will make a perfect addition to your summer wardrobe.

History (just a little)
Created from humble beginnings, espadrilles have come a long way in terms of style. They were produced in Spain and the southern half of France in the 14th century and were worn by everyone including mine workers, laborers, and infantrymen. In later years, the shoes gained popularity throughout other parts of Europe and eventually the rest of the world.
In 1970, designer Yves Saint Laurent came up with the brilliant idea of adding a wedged heel to the simple, practical, jute-sole sandals– transforming them into chic and stylish iconic footwear. More and more, espadrilles are becoming summer fashion staples for both men and women.
Options and Pricing
Espadrilles are available in a variety of colors, heel height, and upper fabric material. The ones designed with ribbons that wrap around the ankles are among the more popular styles. They’re definitely a favorite of mine. I also prefer wedge heels, but flats work as well. It all depends on my mood, how far I’m walking or how long I’ll be standing. If I’m going to be on my feet for a long time, flats shoes are my best friends.
In terms of pricing, you can normally get a gorgeous pair of espadrilles without breaking the bank. However, depending on the brand/designer, etc., there are some that cost about as much as you’ll pay for your child’s out-of-state college tuition (not really, but pretty close).
Retailers such as Nordstroms, Shopbop, and DSW normally carry a vast selection of espadrilles. I’ve also found a few cute ones on TJMaxx.com.
To avoid heartbreak, if you see a pair that you love in your size, get them because there’s a good chance someone else wants them too.
